Bios
Dr. Barbara Burdick holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance and Opera Direction from The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Master and Bachelor of Music degrees in Vocal Performance from Indiana University. She has sung professionally with such opera companies as the Santa Fe Opera, the Washington Civic Opera, and Karlsrud Concerts. Her numerous concert appearances include a concert with composer Ned Rorem. In 1992 she was chosen to participate in the NATS Foundation Internship Program, where she studied with James McKinney and Barbara Doscher.
Dr. Burdick has taught at Longwood College, Shenandoah Conservatory, St. Mary’s College, the University of Cincinnati, Northwestern State University of Louisiana, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Central Michigan University, and Alma College. She had a private studio in Alma, Michigan from 2004 to 2019.
She has adjudicated at NATS Auditions throughout the United States and was recently a requested judge for the Sutton Foster Awards in Michigan, a preliminary round for the Jimmy Awards on Broadway. Her students have often placed in NATS Competitions, including First Place winners in Music Theater, are pursuing advanced degrees in opera, perform nationally, and have been invited to performance workshops on Broadway and Berklee in Boston. She has presented her research on the belt voice at the Wisconsin Music Educators Convention, the International Congress of Voice Teachers, NATS Conventions, the College Music Society, and at the Contemporary Commercial Music Vocal Pedagogy Institute. Her article, “Vocal Techniques for Music Theater: The High School and Undergraduate Singer,” appeared in the January 2005 Journal of Singing. She is a certified instructor of Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method, specializing in both classical and contemporary commercial music technique.
